Grammar Sucks: What To Do To Make Your Writing More Better

grammar_sucks-cover.jpg

I hate grammar. I always have. I find the rules to be confusing and the books about it to be dull. So when my editor suggested that I write a funny book about grammar, I was dumbfounded. I thought a funny book about grammar would be as challenging to write as a funny book about having a pap smear. Of course, I didn’t want to turn down a book deal when it was staring me in the face, so I faked interest and then panicked in the privacy of my own home with a glass of wine and a box of Ho Hos. I tried to figure out how I was going to write a book about a topic that I knew so little about. You may be asking yourself how I can make a living as a writer and not know about grammar or even the fundamental rules of the English language. The answer is pretty simple: When I was writing for television, my lack of grammar knowledge wasn’t much of a problem since I wrote for characters who weren’t much known for their proper sentence structure. And now that I’m writing books, I have the help of grammar check on my computer, an editor at the publishing company, and a very knowledgeable copy editor, who all know the rules of grammar like Paris Hilton knows the hot clubs.Because I didn’t know the difference between a dangling participle and a split infinitive, I teamed up with author/teacher Gary Muschla, who has not only spent years teaching grammar, but has also written several books on teaching grammar and writing. Gary and I were the perfect combination. We’re like yin and yang, or peanut butter and chocolate. With
Gary’s understanding of grammar and my humor, we were destined to write a grammar book the likes of which have never been written before.
And you, my friend, are the lucky recipient of our combined effort. Because you were lucky enough to be born in the same era as we were, you can enjoy the fruits of our literary loins. You can be spoon-fed grammar in a way that you’ve never been before. So sit back and relax with a box of Ho Hos (they really are quite tasty), and open up your mind to the wonderful world of grammar. 1. Hi, Joanne.

This book sounds like a great idea. However, I have a suggestion. It would be great to put this book, and the Pregnancy Sucks book, on CD or tape. I keep wanting to share things I’m reading in these pregnancy books, but my husband is probably not that interested in having me read it to him all the time. However, I’m pretty sure I could offer it as something to listen to during his commute to and from work. Yes, I can make him hear me read it, but this would be better, I think. Anyway, I haven’t any idea how practical an idea this is for you, if the publisher would do it, etc. It’s an idea, anyway.

  2. Thanks, Stacy. I’ll pass the idea along to the publsiher. I don’t know why it’s so hard for fathers-to-be to read pregnancy books. Maybe that’s why we fall in love with our OBs. They’re the only guys we know who’ll read them!

  3. Hi Joanne,
    Thanks for ‘Grammar Sucks’! 🙂
I’ve recently required this book for my college Bus. Com. course; however, the book does not have any companion exercises. I’m currently writing them now.
If you wish to publish a companion exercise guide (similar to ‘Grammar for Dummies’), please let me know!
